Chapter Fourteen: Miss Clara heard Christoph sing Die Träumerei but not the lullaby he sang to Marcus Jerome. She heard Schumann’s notes moving through the room, measured and sure, but when the sound softened—its register dropping low, meant to soothe a child, to call one by name—her shoulders lifted with her breath, and her jaw tightened. That music loosened Miss Clara’s memories of Tarique, sending him wandering through her thoughts.
